Turning clearance is always going to be best with a long bed truck. Trucks with long beds are more designed for towing, and there are less of them on the market today because more people are buying trucks for reasons other than towing. If I were choosing a bed length to tow a 5th wheel camper, I would definitely go with a long bed because it will most easily offer sufficient turning clearance.

The Yakima SideBar Rails cannot be cut as the assembly does in fact involve one bar sliding into the other like you mentioned and it would not be structurally sound, but there is a short bed version of these rails, which is the SideBar Rails for Yakima OverHaul HD and Outpost HD Truck Bed Racks - Short Bed # Y01153.

I know turning clearance can be a problem with the Megacab models of the Ram trucks. We do not carry any automatic sliding hitches at this time, only manual slide hitches, but we often find that sliding fifth wheel hitches do not always cut it when it comes to the Ram trucks with the Megacab due to the bed and cab size. It sounds like you are looking for a sliding fifth wheel hitch. We have sliding hitches available, but the Curt Q24 Fixed Fifth Wheel Hitch, # C16245, does not slide.

This is a common issue with folks who want to tow a fifth wheel trailer. There are a couple things you can do to make sure you have everything set up correctly.
You will want the hitch to be set at the height that 1) allows the trailer to be level, and 2) allows you a minimum of 6 inches between the bottom of the trailer loft and the top of the bed rails. Fifth wheel hitches offer several inches of up and down adjustment to help accomplish this.

No, there are no real draw backs to using a Sidewinder. It will not solve all short bed clearance issues. This will depend on the truck and the width of the trailer.
On 6 foot or 6-1/2 foot beds, you do not have to use a Sidewinder. A Sliding Fifth Wheel hitch is sufficient. Some still prefer to use the Sidewinder as it does not require you to un-lock and lock the fifth wheel as you do with a Slider.

The crossbars that are included with the Thule Xsporter Pro Truck Bed Ladder Rack, part # TH500XT are made of aluminum.

With the Demco Autoslide 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Slider # DM8550022 weighing in at 300lbs the likelihood of it being stolen is pretty slim but there are still a couple options that you can take to help prevent theft. On the side mounting plates # DM6004 there are pins that prevent the puck handles from turning that you could pop out and put in some padlocks to prevent the handles from moving making it impossible to remove from your bed. I have a recommendation but unfortunately we do not offer a longer pin box to replace your Fabex MDI 500 to allow you to clear your basement door. The pin box you have is already considered 'long' and we do not have a pin box that is 6" longer for access to your door.
